Syverson Tile & Stone
was founded in 1932 by Ray G. Syverson Sr. and Ruth Syverson in Sioux Falls, SD. Ray Sr. was a tile installer by trade who decided to form his crew to keep up with demand. His wife Ruth had an accounting and management background. Both were known for their tremendous work ethic and high quality standards. Together they built the business into the largest tile contractor between Minneapolis and Omaha by the 1950s.
Over the years, Syverson Tile & Stone opened up distribution channels and added complementary product lines and services including brick, flagstone, marble, slate, granite, fireplaces, retaining wall block, setting materials, tools, and stone fabrication. Ray Jr. had started on the tile crew, earned his union card, and worked his way into the office as a project manager before becoming President in 1976.
In 1979, Syverson Tile & Stone moved to its present location on Western Avenue as the company continued to grow and prosper. Ray’s son Steve joined the company in 1981 and son Dave joined in 1993. Also during this period, Syverson Tile & Stone expanded into the Fargo, ND market by hiring a sales rep to cover the territory.
In recent years, Syverson Tile & Stone has undergone other major changes. In 1999 the company built a new stone fabrication shop and expanded its showroom and warehouse. In an effort to re-focus on tile and stone fabrication, the brick and landscaping division was sold to Hebron Brick Company of Fargo, ND in 2002. The company also changed by going wholesale only, selling only to those in the building trades.
In 2002, Syverson Tile & Stone built a new 19,600 sq. ft. facility for tile and stone fabrication in Fargo, ND. In addition, a new 8,650 sq. ft. stone fabrication shop was built in Sioux Falls, SD. The expansions in both cities allowed for Syverson Tile & Stone to offer a broader range of products and increased production capacities.
Today, Syverson Tile & Stone is the premier wholesale source of tile and stone in the region. The Sioux Falls based installation crew is still the largest in the region as well as maintaining the high level of quality the founders demanded. You can find numerous examples of Syverson Tile & Stone’s craftsmanship throughout the region. Some notable projects include Hummer of Sioux Falls, The Clubhouse Suites Hotel, The Sheraton Hotel, Dow Rummel Village, Citibank, Verne Eide Motorcars, and several projects for both Sioux Valley and Mckennan Hospitals. Syverson Tile & Stone’s wholesale customer base includes over 700 accounts in 5 states. These accounts include homebuilders, general contractors, floor covering stores, interior designers, cabinet shops, architects, and home centers.
The future is bright as tile and natural stone continue to grow in usage both commercially and residentially. As the construction boom continues throughout the upper Midwest, Syverson Tile & Stone is in a unique position to maintain and grow its already dominant position in the market. By offering the highest quality products and having the best service in the industry, Syverson Tile & Stone will continue its long-standing tradition of success.
